Charcot sent Freud this signed photograph in 1886 as a token of gratitude after Freud had translated some of his works on hysteria into German. His experience of studying with Charcot was transformative. He described Charcot as a genius and suggested that he had ‘a new perception of perfection’ after attending his lectures. He was so influenced by Charcot that he named his eldest son Jean Martin (known as Martin) after him.
