In Totem and Taboo, Freud argued that after the killing of the primal father, there ensued a period of matriarchy, which in turn gave way to a new patriarchal order under the instigation of the family. In Moses and Monotheism Freud would later suggest that it was at this point that the ‘great mother goddesses’ were established, as a ‘compensation for the slight upon the mothers’.
