Freud referred to himself as a ‘Godless Jew’. Even though he rejected the religious and ritualistic elements of Judaism, Freud wrote to Arthur Schnitzler that ‘Judaism still means a great deal to me emotionally’. The presence of this Hanukkah lamp in his collection perhaps attests to this attitude.
